The Important Brake Repair Warning Signs, and How to Check

Brakes are one of the most crucial components of your car to keep you safe. According to Kelley Blue Book, the brakes on most cars can last up to 50,000 miles before they need to be replaced.

If you think you might need brake repair, there are a few key things to look out for.

Read on for some of the most important signs that your brake system may need attention right away.

Loud Squeaking Noises

Your brakes may make mild squeaking sounds from time to time. However, if that noise gets louder or more frequent, it’s time to consider a brake maintenance check.

In most cases, loud, squeaky brakes indicate that they’re worn out and need replacing. If you hear a clicking or grinding sound, then it’s like the brake pad to blame. Either way, make sure you give yourself a good stopping distance until you can take your car in for a professional brake inspection.

Brake Repair: Burning Smells

Solid brake systems in good condition should never emit an odor. If you notice a burning smell whenever you hold the brakes or press down, it’s time to get them checked out by a reputable auto repair shop.

Pull over to the side of the road and let your brakes cool off if they’re producing a strong burning odor. If not, they could overheat, making it extremely dangerous to drive.

If the burning smell is paired with visible smoke coming from your wheels, the problem is likely worse. Always make sure you perform regular car maintenance and get your brakes checked immediately if you notice either or both of these warning signs.

Fluid Leaks

Brake systems require brake fluid to keep things working properly and to help bring your vehicle to a safe stop. If the brakes are leaking fluid, it means there is some kind of damage present.

Brake fluid usually has a light yellow tint to it, so if you notice these wet spots under your car, it’s time for brake repair. Brown fluid leaking under your vehicle may mean that the brake fluid is too old and should be replaced. A great way to practice brake maintenance is to check the fluid every time you get an oil change or at least once a year.

To check the brake fluid, pop open your hood and remove the brake fluid cap to get a better look at the color. Most brake fluid lasts around four or five years, so if it’s older than that, it’s time to get the fluid replaced as soon as possible.
